Hi there. Vidi, vini, elevationi negativa (my Latin isn't that good but you get the idea I think) We came, we saw and drastically lost altitude ;-)
You can have so much fun with old planes, just great! Sunday Bas and I spend a reasonable amount of time trying out the (for us) new flightsim IL2 - Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles. Those of you who don't know this sim should imagine a very good flightsim but instead of using the most recent planes out there it all takes place between 1939 and 1945. So we're talking about the old WW2 fighter planes here.
So no radar, no guided missiles, no afterburners, in fact not much at all, hehe. We're not flying absolutely blindfolded of course, we do have some info: we know how high, how fast and for how long we're able to stay airborne (fuel wise that is). But that's basically it. When you find your enemy you simply point your plane at your opponent, aim a little and give it some lead! And this is just what makes this so much fun. This way it's so much more exiting then when you fire a missile at a 'dot' flying sometimes 10 or more miles away from you. More up close and personal so to speak.
Among these old planes is the infamous Messerschmitt BF-109, a extremely versatile fighter plane. Which is (no coincidence) Biek's favorite ;-) It's a good plane, quite fast and very maneuverable. It can carry quite some ordinance also, which is quite handy in these times ;-) I'll spare you all the details but rest assure that we made a bunch of flight hours again!
While doing so we also watched the UK Masters 2004 snooker championship and with Grand Prix Legends we drove a number of practice laps on the circuit of Spa, as a kind of training for the upcoming Dutch Simracing Zone competition race. It's the last race of this DSZ season and we want to do well. Bas drove his Honda and I was running my BRM. It was just like old times.
When we first started driving GPL, around March 2003, we had those very same cars, only then we just picked them for their visual aspects! Nowadays we both drive Lotus because they are much lighter and more powerful. In other words: they are faster. That this is only theoretically is proven by one guy in our competition who drives a BRM and is more than just a bit faster than us. The guy flies with that car. So this means that a fast driver can be fast in just about any car ... When I grow up I'd like to be at least as fast as he is. Oh well ... you need to have goals, right?
Fly safe,
